How do babies see when they are born? When my first child was born, a lady asked me if my baby could see. I was surprised by his question and I answered yes, but it is true that newborn babies have strange gaze and it is difficult for them to focus and follow objects or people with their eyes.
The sense of sight is not exactly one of the most developed senses at birth. For our children, the sense of smell or touch is usually more decisive at this stage of life, which, without a doubt, will change during the first months of life.
The visual acuity of the newborn is limited, sight is the sense that matures more slowly, it increases progressively until 2 years of age.
Newborn vision is a developing sense; the baby has peripheral vision, that is, he can perceive what is happening around him, but it is very difficult for him to focus well on an object within his visual field.
What is it that catches your attention the most? Knowing how a newborn baby sees, will make things easier for us when it comes to stimulating him; we can choose and opt for toys or colors that appeal to them.
Newborns see well at a distance of 20 or 30 centimeters, the approximate space between them and their mother during feeding. Although they do not pay much attention to the visual world, their pupil constricts, they blink when bright light is shone in their eyes, and they are also capable of perceiving colors, albeit in a more dilute way.
From 6 to 8 weeks, newborns will be able to fix their gaze on an object and can follow its movements, at this time their pupil allows them to perceive a wide range of lights and shadows, capture contrasts and recognize shapes.
When I went with my son to one of his first check-ups, the pediatrician attracted his attention powerfully with a kind of white racket with a black spiral inside; the contrast and the effect of movement produced by its observation made my son become interested and follow the path of the object with his gaze.
The way to stimulate a baby would be through contrasts, that is, when two colors come into contact and the differences between them intensify. Throughout the first trimester of life, the most appropriate stimulus will be the black and white contrast.
During the second trimester they will recognize colors such as red, blue and green… all of them intense colors, and from 18 months on, they can distinguish the intensity of many other colors.
In short, it is advisable to use objects or toys with well-defined shapes and bright colors, if possible in contrast to some other color (better only with two colors, since the contrast will be greater), so you will be able to attract the attention of your small and educate their powers of observation.
Choosing the right toys or the decoration of your child's room will help you stimulate your baby's sight, a sense that plays a decisive role for knowledge within our society of images and communications.
